Resilience is not built by pushing harder.

In reality, resilience is built by learning how to recover intelligently.

In a recent podcast episode, we explored a practice that has gained attention in the performance and wellbeing space: ice therapy. As a certified Wim Hof Method instructor, I often see people drawn to the intensity of cold exposure because they associate discomfort with discipline and mental strength.

But the real conversation is not about the cold.

It’s about how we approach stress.

In the episode, we broke down the fundamentals that make ice therapy safe and effective: understanding personal health prerequisites, using proper breathing techniques before exposure, preparing the body through warm-up exercises, and allowing the nervous system to recover afterward. Without these elements, what should be a powerful tool for resilience can quickly become unnecessary risk.

The cold itself is not the benefit.

The benefit lies in how the body learns to regulate stress.

When practiced correctly, controlled cold exposure teaches the nervous system to remain calm under pressure. The breathing stabilizes physiology. The body learns that stress does not automatically require panic or resistance. Instead, it can be met with awareness and control.

For leaders and organizations, the implications are broader than physical wellbeing.

Modern workplaces expose people to constant cognitive and emotional pressure. Deadlines, decisions, uncertainty. The leaders who perform sustainably are not those who simply endure stress longer than others. They are the ones who train their system to recover quickly and remain composed under intensity.

Practices like cold exposure highlight a deeper principle of performance: stress without regulation leads to burnout. Stress combined with recovery builds resilience.

The question leaders might consider is simple.

Are we teaching people to tolerate pressure…

Or are we helping them develop the capacity to regulate it?
